Denim Design Lab is excited to announce the release of its first Women’s premium denim collection; Denim Design Lab (DDL®) Denim.

Creators of one-of-a-kind DDL® denim finishing kits, limited edition books and Men’s premium denim, Denim Design Lab® is set to launch a focused offering of Women’s denim jeans geared toward true denim aficionados. The inspiration for our first Women’s collection is drawn from what we term Modern Vintage.  Combining the details, manufacturing techniques and fabrications that make true vintage denim so desirable, we painstakingly engineer and hand-cut each style to ensure an exceptional fit, adding DDL’s modern design flair to enhance each style, creating what we believe are the perfect jeans.

The collection launches with four perfectly crafted, sexy silhouettes in finishes that range from super soft silicone rinses to extremely technical vintage replica washes. Premium denim cloth, all from historic Cone Denim, in basic, stretch, novelty and authentic selvage qualities have been used in the creation of our first Women’s denim offering. From three different selvage styles to Cone’s Black Seed pima cotton, the foundation for our extraordinary fit is the superior denim we use as our raw canvas to work with.

The entire collection, manufactured in Los Angeles, CA, carries retail price points from $125.00 to $275.00. Denim Design Lab (DDL®) Women’s Denim, launching in Spring 08, will be offered through the world’s finest denim based specialty retailers.

DENIM DESIGN LAB ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF DDL PREMIUM DENIM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Contact Information: Denim Design Lab LLC Phone: (949) 366-3307 Fax (949) 366-3304 info@denimdesignlab.com www.denimdesignlab.com

Denim Design Lab is excited to announce the release of its first Men’s premium denim collection; Denim Design Lab Denim.

Following on the success of our one-of-a-kind Denim Design Lab denim finishing kits and limited edition premium T’s, DDL® will be expanding its collection with an amazing offering of denim jeans geared toward true denim aficionados.

The inspiration for the first collection is what we term Modern Vintage.  Drawing from details, manufacturing techniques and fabrications that make true vintage denim so desirable, we add DDL®’s modern design flair to enhance each style, creating what we believe are the perfect jeans.

The raw canvas upon which to create…
To supplement our unique Denim Design Lab kits, we are introducing a revolutionary denim jean – a raw vintage inspired selvage jean, at a retail price point of only $100.

The collection moves from this opening price point raw style, to three expertly washed versions in the same silhouette, all the way up to a group of ultra-premium, limited edition, hand numbered washed styles priced at $250.00+, each made from Cone Black Seed pima cotton, the most luxurious denim available today.

The entire collection is manufactured in Los Angeles, CA, utilizing 100% selvage denim from Cone Denim’s White Oak plant in North Carolina.

Denim Design Lab (DDL®) Denim, launching in Fall 07, will be offered through the world’s finest denim based specialty retailers.

For the serious denim heads out there, here is a bit more info to hold you over until you can get your hands on a pair of Denim Design Lab Denim…

Denim Design Lab’s premium denim is crafted from the finest selvage denim available in today’s market. While our Raw Canvas and Indigo SuperStar styles utilizes denim that matches the DNA of authentic vintage piece goods, our Vintage Buckle Back styles puts a modern spin on the original masterpieces to accentuate, and at times exaggerate, the characteristics that make true vintage denim so desirable.

To end up with the unique look and luxurious feel of these denim garments, we had to start with the absolute best long staple cotton money could buy; gossypium barbadense or Black Seed cotton. First grown in the USA in 1790, Black Seed cotton developed into what was called Sea Island cotton. The seeds of this particular strain of cotton made its way to Egypt in the late 1800’s (i.e., Egyptian Cotton). In contrast, the bulk of all cotton used today is derived from the more common gossypium hirsutum or upland strain of cotton. The fibers of this strain are shorter and thicker than that of the Black Seed variety. The significantly longer fibers and softer feel of the Black Seed cotton results in denim which is so soft and supple, that even when raw, the denim feels as comfortable as an aged pair of jeans. When the US government required a particularly strong tire cord for airplanes in the mid 1900’s, it established a program to reintroduce the Black Seed cotton variety back into the USA. In honor of the Pima Indians who worked on the reintroduction project, the cotton fibers they produced were called pima (i.e., Pima Cotton).

The superior Black Seed cotton is woven on vintage shuttle looms in Cone Denim’s historic White Oak plant in North Carolina. The unique yarn appearance of this denim is the result of a carefully engineered slub pattern designed to replicate mistakes in the weaving process that would occur if there was a broken gear on the spinning machine or if a roll had a flat spot on one side. The particular look is described as a flame pattern, in that the raised slubs subjected to more surface contact create the look of small flames of texture radiating throughout the denim.

The pure indigo shade of this denim is achieved by a unique dying process which replicates the look of pre-1920’s denim, prior to the move to the more common long chain dyeing technique. The process results in more indigo being deposited on some yarns than others, further accentuating the yarns unique appearance.

Starting from the best materials available, we transform this denim into a modern masterpiece, borrowing key design lines from traditional buckle-back work wear jeans and adding modern trim detailing, construction and fit to create what we call modern vintage.

In addition to the raw version of our Vintage Buckle Back style, we are producing three limited edition finished versions. Only 1,000 pairs of each style will be produced, each hand numbered and finished with the most inovative wash techniques available. Our goal with these styles is to be the first to market with incredable new wash developments, as well as to offer the most painstakingly accurate vintage repliquas available.

Denim Design Lab LLC announces the US launch of the DDL Artist Series at the upcoming BLUE trade show in New York

With denim as the medium of choice and t-shirts as the vehicle, Denim Design Lab has joined forces with some of the hottest LA artists to create their Gallery T’s; one of a kind denim-centric masterpieces on a premium t-shirt base. Mixed media methods are employed by the artists to create one off images on a base of denim fabric, which are secured to each Gallery T behind screened antique frames.

The artists are granted free reign to create as they please, using any methods they desire, the only rule is that the starting medium must be denim fabric. The result is a mobile art gallery with initial themes ranging from Japanese motifs, to urban cityscapes, to Hip Hop images, to abstract explosions of color. Each creation is signed and dated by the artist. The first installment of DDL’s Artist Series features art from Curb One (Chronic Avengers), Brian Lindstrom & Brian Takumi.

The Denim Design Lab Artist Series garments will be extremely limited in their initial distribution. Only the most exclusive denim focused retailers in each State in the USA and key International cities will be offered these limited edition styles.

The DDL Artist Series received an amazing response during its European debut at Bread & Butter Barcelona last week, and Blue in N.Y. (July 24 – 26; booth #136) will provide the perfect venue for its first US gallery showing. Following Blue, the collection will be on display at Project in Las Vegas (August 28 – 30).

Introducing… Denim Design Lab

Denim Design Lab was formed to help release the inner designer in everyone. Creativity, originality, and self-expression are necessary to help ensure we all move from the plastic to the fantastic. We believe with the right roadmap, tools and inspiration, anyone can create original wearable works of art.

The medium of choice here at DDL is denim. Denim is the blank canvas upon which we create, and we are here to help instruct others to do the same.

Designed for the most discerning denim collectors, aficionados and fanatics, our Denim Design Lab Kit consists of specific tools of the trade used to hand finish and customize denim jeans. Each DDL Kit includes a copy of the book Denim Design Lab, which features detailed instructions on achieving specific customized details, a comprehensive history of denim jeans and denim fabric, a review of the denim fabric and jean manufacturing process, as well as numerous historical and vintage photographs to serve as inspiration.

Denim Design Lab provides a roadmap and the basic tools necessary to recreate many of the most common wear and stain details found in authentic vintage denim, as well as some of the most sought after vintage inspired styles currently sold at retail. DDL Kits are designed to help create &/or accelerate an aged vintage appearance on store bought denim, rather than during the actual production process of denim (pre-retail).

The Denim Design Lab collection is extremely limited in its initial distribution, being sold through only the most premium denim based retailers globally.

Below is an example of a vintage replica hand finished using the tools and “know how” from the Denim Design Lab Kit. The starting point was a raw pair of Levi’s “Shrink to Fit” jeans. This particular example was on display at the Ron Herman Denim Bar as part of their DDL merchandising.
